Case description

Despite the strong market opportunity and growth projections, BearingPoint faced significant competition from traditional competitors and new entrants. The firm believed that innovation, consistency in methods and a focused approach on delivery of a major client need (a common approach to information management) would help it improve its position in the market in a sustainable fashion.

Business goals

Goals for the project could be classified as:

Increasing total sales
Improving project margins

Secondary goals

Attracting top individuals to the organization
Improving speed-to-market for showcasing thought leadership
Reduction of knowledge loss

Existing systems

Prior to the approach, BearingPoint used document management oriented systems for knowledge management and made a heavy reliance on email. While many informal networks existed for collaboration existed, conversations tended to take place over email and be geographically or project-centric. While global COIs existed and the supporting technology was available, IP sharing needed to be improved. In addition, as many consultants were on long-running client engagements they leveraged client collaboration systems knowledge sharing took place outside the corporate environment. Finally the current environment did not provide a mechanism for driven open content in a collaborative fashion.

The number of BearingPoint information management consultants was approximately 1500 people. The global IM community was estimated to be several hundered thousand practitioners, with 50,000 professionals for which Information Management was a major focus.

Enterprise 2.0 solution

As a consulting firm, BearingPoint's is a client-oriented, people-centric business that relies heavily on method-based intellectual property. Development of knowledge networks and skill capabilities are just as important as defining innovative solutions and ensuring their quality.

Business Solution

The IM suite approach acted as an enabler in each of these areas by:.

Orienting solutions around a common, method-based framework
Improving quality of assets through greater sharing of IP
Improving quality of assets through greater reuse of commonly used enterprise content
Reducing cost of sale through greater reuse of proposal content and better knowledge of firm capabilities

This approach drove the need for globally solution suite, built through social media technologies and oriented around an open source framework.

Technical Architecture

The IM Solution Suite is developed in a a true Enterprise 2.0 fashion: it makes use of the collaborative, user-driven content built using Web 2.0 techniques and technologies on the MIKE2.0 site and incorporates it internally into the enterprise. The tecnology platform is referred to as "omCollab" and it is used for external and internal collaboration.

IM Suite Business Goals

The IM Solution Suite provides a major differentiator to BearingPoint in terms of having an internal collaborative community (overall 1100 as of March 2009), a showcase for differentiation through the MIKE2.0 site and a differentiating approach to areas such as Information Management strategy through use of extreme blueprinting and roadmapping techniques and enterprise 2.0.

Clients

The types of engagements where the approach is most heavily used are related to Enterprise Information Management strategy, including Enterprise 2.0 strategy. Recent BearingPoint projects that heavily leveraged the approach include:

Creation of the global online channel strategy for a major retail bank
Development of the collaborative business intelligence strategy for a major European government department
Development of the enterprise data management strategy for a European postal organization
Creation of the data-driven transformation strategy for a major media company
Development of an information management business case for a federal government agency

Information Management Profession

Since its release to the open source community, MIKE2.0 has been referenced a number of times as a case study on Web 2.0 communities, including the Groundswell book on Enterprise 2.0. Besides the content contributions in MIKE2.0, that includes a solution offering for Enterprise 2.0, Governance 2.0 and Agile Business Tranformation. BearingPoint has contributed the technology platform, omCollab, to the open source community.

Hurdles / Challenges

There were a number of challenges as part of this initiative:

Promoting open source adoption within a large consulting organization and encouraging contribution of the firm's intellectual property to an open source community as a way to grow business. This required strong leadership, a well-defined business case and significant engagement with the corporate legal team
Working within budget constraints. The team leveraged open source technologies to build its technology platform.
Driving content creation through the use of social media when many of the participants were not familiar with the technologies
Creative an active, global community around information management that was contradictory to formal performance metrics and organizational structures. This required strong leadership, ensuring key roles and responsibilities were distributed globally and planned face-to-face meetings to gain commitment.
"Competing" initiatives that focused strong candidate contributors to use of other internal and external social media sites. While this initiatives could also be helpful, many of the enterprise 2.0 evangelists in the company already had "day jobs" as consultants and their own area of interest on other collaboration sites.

Many challenges still exist for the project, but the overall size of the community, number of active contributors, clients' using the approach and capabilities of the omCollab technology infrastructure continue to improve.

There is a strong need for social bookmarking to drive enterprise knowledge management and despite its simplicity it is difficult to drive rating and tagging in the enterprise.
