Got the Indian ISP, BSNL's "DataOne" broadband 512 kbps "Home 1800" connection in Feb 2005, a month after it was launched in the country. This has a ridiculous (like other ISPs in India) data transfer limit of 5 GB per month. They recently (Aug 15, 2005) started "night unlimited" where you can download as much as you like (unmetered) between 2am and 8am everyday, hardly convenient.
For me, it's not broadband unless it's at least 1 mbps. Hence the "fraudband" category tag :) per month here, it's like I'm paying the equivalent of US $ 230 per month for it !
The 512kbps connection costs Rs (rupees) 1800 plus taxes and surcharges (about Rs 2000 plus the mandatory phone line rental charges of at least rs 250 per month)... converting this to US levels (earnings/purchasing power etc)... it's about one-tenth (or 10 times, if converting the other way). If it costs me Rs. 2300/
Hopefully things will change soon. At least in a year or two with some sort of wireless technology being widely rolled out (WiMAX, HSDPA etc along with WiFi).
