One sentence summary

IdeaFactory is a site we built internally to help share ideas across the entire organization.

Company information

(name, size, industry, URL, etc.)

Oracle Corporation (website, stats)

AppsLab (http://www.oracleappslab.com)

Case description

Most organizations, Oracle included, have no way to share ideas. The best most organizations have is email. The problem is that this creates no visibility or discussion around ideas. Furthermore, the lack of visibility also impacts adoption of ideas. Therefore, innovation is challenged inside the firewall. The site we built makes it easy for anyone in the company (60,000 strong) to share, comment, and rate ideas.

We built the site in less than a week using open source technology (Rails). We have seen rapid adoption in only a few weeks with over 50 ideas contributed without any internal marketing. Viral marketing at its best.

We also are having periodic awards for the best ideas. Can you say iPhone?

Enterprise 2.0 solution

How we built IdeaFactory

Results / Benefits

We are still early, but have seen tremendous excitement in applying 2.0 concepts to how we work. This is the first of many projects we have in the works at Oracle.

Hurdles / Challenges

_The biggest challenge was getting hardware. Rather than waiting for IT approval or a place on the floor, we bought a box from Dell and were off to the races. Technical skills are already on my team so that was a non-issue.

Lessons learned

-Build. Don't get caught up in design, ppt, or exec buy-in. Show your vision in code.

-Get the word out by any means necessary. We link IdeaFactory in our email signature, write in our blog, send a newsletter, etc.

-Don't expect miracles. Management will take time to see the value. Let it happen.
