Sometimes documents must be in powerpoint, word, excel or some other non-HTML format. You can actually use the workspace to store these documents: just attach them to the page (even different versions of the same document). The page can then contain meta information about the document so it will be easy to find using search. People then can start linking to the document-page and create thebrain like connections.

I can store the file in a directory on my PC, but what makes sense today as far as which directory it should go in, might not make sense tomorrow. With the linking capability of socialtext I can create different views and links to the same document-page from different places.

For example:

  1. I start a new powerpoint presentation called market-overview.ppt
  2. After i feel it is first draft ready, I email the wiki with subject line "Market Overview", attach the ppt file and in the body of the text add some background information about the attached file. The first line contains "Category: Hans' Blog"
  3. When the wiki receives my email it will create a new page called "Market Overview" and attaches the ppt file. It also creates an entry into my blog

By blogging my files, I will be able to get a timeline on what files i was working on when.

The Socialtext wiki also has the ability to index into attached files, such as word documents and PDFs. So you can search for terms inside your documents from the wiki!
