Back to Socialtext Documentation.
You can include the contents of one page in another page. This feature can be very useful:
You cannot include a page in itself, or include a page that includes its parent.
To include the page titled "Table of Contents" from the current workspace:
{include [Table of Contents]}
To include the page titled "Socialtext Customer Exchange" from the workspace "exchange":
{include exchange [Socialtext Customer Exchange]}
To build a dashboard, you can also put the includes inside of a table, along with other content.
(See a more realistic example of a project dashboard at the Socialtext Customer Exchange.)
The included page below explains linking. Back to Socialtext Documentation. Links in a wiki are very useful and powerful ways to organize information. There are many ways to make links in Socialtext wikis.
Link to a page by nameYou can make a link to a page by simply typing the page title in square brackets. Or, use the link button, described below. Using the link button
The link button is in the toolbar at the top of the edit window. While you are editing a page, click the link button: You will see a dialog box that allows you to build several different kinds of links. ![]() Link to a page in the same workspaceThis is probably the most common kind of link you'll want to make. For a page on the same workspace, you simply enter the name of that page into a dialog box and click "save". To make a link to another page in your workspace, click the "Wiki link" button. The title of the page you're currently editing will appear by default in the Page box. Erase it, and type the name of the other page in the "Page" box. A menu of matching page titles will drop down as you start to type, and you may select the page from that list. Save. The following example would create a link called "Making a Link". That link would lead to a page titled "Making a link" in the current workspace. ![]() Link to a page, using different link textIt can be very useful to make a link that's clickable and leads a reader to a new page, but that doesn't use the actual page title as the highlighted words that make up the link. For example, you might want to link to a page called "Eevee", but you'd like the highlighted text that people click on to read "My Favorite Pokemon". To create that link, type Eevee in the Page box, and "My Favorite Pokemon" in the Link text box. ![]() Once you Save the link menu dialog box, and save again in the editing window, you would see that link on the page like this: ![]() Link to another page in a different workspaceTo link to a page in a different workspace, click the "Wiki link" button. Type the name of the other workspace in the "Workspace" box. A menu of matching workspace names will drop down as you start to type, and you may select the workspace from that list. The title of the page you're currently editing will appear by default in the Page box. Erase it, and type the title of the other page in the Page box. A menu of matching page titles will drop down as you start to type, and you may select the page from that list. Save. ![]() In the example above, you would create a link to a page titled Gelatinous Cube in a workspace named MonsterManual. ![]() The link text would appear on the page as "My favorite D&D monster", as above. Warning: workspace doesn't existIf you try to create a link to a workspace that doesn't exist, you will get a warning in the dialog box when you hit save. It will stop you from creating the link. Use an existing workspace, or click Cancel to exit. ![]() Linking to sectionsIt can be very useful to break up a long page with section headers. Then, you can link to those sections directly, whether they're on the same page or on different pages. Instead of having to scroll or search down a long page, your reader will end up exactly at the desired heading. All headers, H1 - H4, are automatically section names. You may also create an invisible section name using the Section Marker entry in the Insert... menu and link to it. Link to a section on the same pageTo link to a section on the same page you're editing, click "Section in current page". Fill out the name of the section and save. ![]() Link to a section on another pageTo link to a section on another page, click "Wiki link". Change the page name to the correct page. Fill out the section name. As with many other links, you have the option to make the link text differ from the title of the page and section you're linking to. In the example below, a link would be created to a page titled "List of All the Pokemon", to the section on that page marked "Eevee". But the link text would appear on your page as "My favorite Pokemon". ![]() Creating a weblink![]() Links explainedPage link
While editing in Rich Text mode, link to another given page, say the page titled "There", simply by selecting it and clicking on You can also just enclose the title of the page in brackets. For example, [There] will make a link There. Link names are not case sensitive, so you can also link to the same page with there. Dashed linksLinks to pages that exist will have a solid underline. However, links to pages that do not already exist will have a dashed underline. Just click on the link and write the new page! This makes it easy to create new pages. We call this Link As You Think. Link textSometimes you don't want the text of the link to be the same as the name of the page. In Rich Text mode, the Link menu lets you type in link text. In Wiki Text mode, you can specify the link text by writing "link text"[Page Name] . For instance, "how to link"[Linking] : how to link. Links to other workspacesIn Wiki Text mode, you can link to a page in another workspace simply by writing {link: different-workspace [Page]}. For instance, to link to the Tutorials page in the Customer Exchange, write {link: exchange [Tutorials]} Links to sections inside pagesIn Rich Text mode, the Link menu lets you make links to particular sections of a page. In Wiki Text mode, you can link directly to any section on a page by using the text of the heading or of the section marker: {link: Section Heading}. You can link to a section on a different page in a different workspace by writing: {link: different-workspace [Page] Section }. For instance, to link to the following heading Link here{link: [Linking] Link here} Linking (Link here) (this workspace) Naming a section on a pageIn Wiki Text mode, you can create a name for a section by typing {section: section-name } in the page. The name won't be visible when you view the page, but you can use the name to make a link directly to that section. For instance, the section {section: Naming a section} is at the bottom of this page. You can link to it via {link: [Linking] Naming a section} and get this link: Linking (Naming a section) . External linksIn either mode, to link to any website, just write its URL; e.g. http://www.socialtext.com. If that is a link to a web image, the image will appear in the page. Or use the Link menu to create a Web link. External link textIn Wiki Text mode, if you want to refer to an external website with particular text for the link, you can write: "link text"<http://www.socialtext.com> and get this link: link text If you refer to an external image with particular text for the link, the page will display a link to the external image instead of the image itself. You can write: "link text for an image"<http://www.socialtext.com/images/button_starttrial.gif> and get this link: link text for an image The invisible section labelled "Naming a section" is here Back to Socialtext Documentation. |
