With Socialtext 2.20 we bring you a number of interaction improvements that should make using the wiki easier. These improvements are listed below.
Pages now display 20% faster than in Socialtext 2.19, and 40% faster than Socialtext 2.18. We no longer preload the code that implements most of the interactive features of the wiki, thus speeding up reading and traversing pages. You may notice that it takes a little longer to open the editor or the sidebar.
Images are now displayed in Simple and Preview modes. Images above a certain size are automatically "Scaled to Fit" when displayed. The original image is still linked from the Attachments panel in the sidebar and the All Files list. The scaled image is available from within the page (right click the image on Windows, Control-Click on Mac).
Click on an image in Simple mode to bring up the image resizing dialog. Choose from Small, Medium, Large, Scaled to Fit (as above) or Custom image sizes. Only proportional scaling is allowed (no skew or stretch). Images are resized immediately after the dialog is closed.
It is now easier to upload files. When you select a file to upload, it is immediately uploaded, even while you are editing a page. The page is refreshed after every upload so you see your new images and links as you upload. Browse and upload as many times as you like before closing the dialog.
Upload Details: When you upload a file while editing, the file link or image appears where you put the cursor. When you upload a file while viewing, the image or the link to the file is inserted at the top of the page. You may move or remove the link to the file or the image while you are editing. The ability to extract a ZIP file has been moved to the Manage Files dialog.
It is simpler to make links. When you click on the Link chain icon in the editing toolbar, you will see a new dialog box, where you may create a Wiki link, an InterWiki link, a link to a Section on the current page, or a Web link. The link will be inserted at the cursor position. Remember to create spaces around the cursor before you click the Link icon. The Link dialog box works in both Simple and Advanced modes.
You can now create a New Page from any existing page, in addition to making a page from the Dashboard. Four new large icons are at the top of each page: the familiar Tools,
Email, and Print, and the additional "New Page" icon.
It is now easier for customers and for Socialtext to create custom skins. There have been improvements to the skin code, the code that displays skins, and the documentation for creating skins, making it easier to create custom skins. Custom skin documentation may be founded at the CSS KIt page.
