Socialtext Workspaces

Socialtext Workspaces enable you to collaborate with colleagues. You can organize information, write together, share plans and ideas.

You can create and participate in any number of workspaces. By default, all workspaces are private, and every user needs to log in to see and change content. Workspaces can also be made public. For more information, see: Authentication, Authorization, and Access Control in Socialtext.

Getting to your Workspaces

You always have access to your workspaces by clicking on Workspaces in the Navigation Menu or selecting All My Workspaces in the Workspaces Drop-down Menu

Another handy way to get to your workspaces is the Workspaces Widget on your dashboard. This widget displays the ten most recently visited workspaces. For each workspace, the following is listed:

Clicking on a workspace's title will take you to that workspace's central page.

If you are a member of more than ten workspaces, you can see a list of all of them by by selecting My Workspaces in Settings .

This page is also a portal to your Settings . If there is no Workspace Toolbar currently open (i.e. you have not recently activated a workspace), you will see the Basic Settings . If the Workspace Toolbar is displayed, you will see either the Workspace Settings or, if you are an administrator of this workspace, the Administrator Settings . Click on any of these settings links for more information.

Workspace Toolbar

When this toolbar is displayed, it indicates that you are currently working within the named workspace. For example, if you were to navigate to the Workspaces Page once this toolbar is displayed, the Workspace Settings would be applied to the workspace named in the toolbar. Additionally, lists such as My Watchlist will display items from this workspace only. New pages you create will be added to the workspace displayed in this toolbar.

The following items are available on the Workspace Toolbar:

Click on the links above for more information.

Workspace Central Page

When you click on a link to a workspace, you are taken to the workspace central page. This is a page that all users see when they click on a link to go to the workspace. The "central page" in a workspace is a page with the same title as the workspace. You can optionally configure the central page to be a weblog view. See: Settings and Administration for detail.

Invite Others

If you are an administrator for the workspace, this item is included on your Workspace Toolbar. (It is absent otherwise.) When you click on this it takes you to Invite Other Users in your Administrator settings .

People in your Workspace

When Socialtext People is enabled, you have a many opportunities to see who is doing what in your workspace.

Whenever you see a person -- in the list of authors at the bottom of each page and blog post, search results and list views, in the attribution section of a comment, in revision history, in the "insert user" feature, you can click on the person's name or photo to be taken to their Profile. On their profile, you can see in their Update widget what other pages that person has been editing.

Some examples of People links (although you can click on any name or photo you see):
