Mobile user experience design
Mobile Web Best Practices, proposed by W3C (as posted by Lisa):
http://www.w3.org/TR/mobile-bp/#iddiv2126636936
Should we use 2 different domain names?1 for regular users and 1 for mobile users?Same content, but displayed different.
But Google will drop you in the ranking. Also, 2 different URLs = 2 different brands.
We detect what the browser type is: phone or web.We grab the type and then display off the type it is.
Giampiero Recco of Beeweb:
If you adapt your mobile website you probably can do an automatic redirect to the different domain name.We don’t suggest changing “.com” to a “.mobi”
Google recognizes these as 2 different websites.
Matt Cuts’s talk that he gave at the wordrpess bootcamp.
Can we setup the robot text files to exclude a URL name? No.
Should there be a separate user experience on the mobile device?
Full web is quite limited on any mobile interface.
Example: Bill Johnston trying to program TiVo over iPhone last Sunday night.
Giampiero Recco of Beeweb demo of
a full website www.rds.it/?/home
and then the link to the mobile website http://m.rds.it/
using HTML
same kind of look and feel on both sites: colors, icon, etc.
Flash Lite: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Flash_Lite
continuously updated.
We’ve been releasing on open source / free platform
http://m.pgvisual.it/index.php/content/pg/home
the presentation needs to be in one column. But need to be aware of wide-screen mode phones.
Jitendra: How will this change if we get the mobile phones that have projectors built into them?
Seems like we’d be limited by the input device rather than the output device?
__
?: Get rid of redundant navigation?Have only 1 path of access?
Giampiero Recco: We always implement *search*facility on the mobile, because you come to find something. At least the main things should be there.Simplify the main topics and list them on every page rather than back, back, back to the main page.
OR have all the links on the main page and then always have a link back to the main page.
? from BillJ: what devices make you push to the
GR: Nokia is screwing up things in its most recent browsers. You can really play ping pong and it’s hard to stop at the right place.Click through links are much faster.
? do you manipulate java script so that different devices work?
GR: We don’t use java script. If you put some logic on the mobile web page, then you are making the user experience worse now. Most phone devices do not support java script. We use HTML.
? menu placement.
We put the links at the end, except for the first page where it should be at the beginning. After the second page, always at the end.
BJ: basically nobody goes to your homepage on the web anymore. But for now everyone is starting on your homepage on the mobile.
Erin from AOL: once they hit your homepage for the first time, the only reason they would come back to the home page is if it is specific for them = dashboard (Google) or something like CNN (dashboard for news).
GR: we think that the user experience and UI for mobile is key.UI is dependent on the technology available on the handset.
What are we envisioning that can be deployed? We go to the limit of what can be done on phones. We want new services to be best on the newest phones. We sketch things by hand, then go to prototype phase.Flash lite prototype in a few days so that you can immediately try different ways to access things.
We want pages to load and to look at pagination issues, etc.
BillJ: a lot of the constraints were things we had to consider on web1, like constraints with bandwidth limitations, etc.
Web 1.0 had a limited number of computer and browser types.
Now we have hundreds of mobile types.Even with Beeweb’s extensive database, some devices will not be found.
We develop and then test on a subset of about 12 classes of phones that tend to be more problematic.
Jive integrated: we can’t customize to open space because we’ve customized too much.
GR: at least one of my examples has been done in Word Press, connecting to our platform.
Jive and clearspace (1 and 2):(Brian from Quest software)
Platform services
Competitor of Jive
difficulty for a third-party vendor to keep updated
VAWARE:
we have the same database and content, but interface is totally different
less targeted toward phones (obsolete phones?), but it’s simpler.
We’re entirely hosted
Bill asking about User Experience:
Niklas Lyback from Nokia:
RG: Guidelines that are given are the best practice rules that could be shared
Erin from AOL: I haven’t gotten into mobile (for my responsibilities) yet but these conversations today
CyWorld: when localizing, you can’t take what you have in Korea and dump it here and make it work. We’ve had to build a new site here.Going mobile, we have to find out what
In Korea, there is so much information there on your mobile phone through CyWorld: Yelp or GoogleMaps features are all on CyWorld mobile in Korea.Your online experience via your mobile.
Erin from AOL: I’ve played in CyWorld before and it is completely immersive. Your life and your persona in another space. What of that do you take and make relevant to the mobile handset. It’s a whole life in and of itself.
Search is totally different for mobile v. non-mobile uses
Non-mobile online search is huge.
Mobile, you have a purpose when you’re looking at your mobile handset.
? What do you do on your mobile handsets:
Aggregators of my activity so that I don’t have to go to a bunch of other sites.
Ding
What happened since I last looked at my device?
VA Ware: Integration that I have with my calendar and address book that can easily be accessed with information that I already have on my mobile device.I want that kind of integration.
Security issues
Might not want too much integration
Control of when and how that information is controlled.
Those walls are coming down:
what is the purpose of Spokeo? To freak people out?
Mantra used to be “Be careful what I post on my MySpace page because a perspective employee might look at it.”
New mantra is “If a perspective employee enters one of my old email addresses then all my previous comments will come up.”
? Jitendra: what is your experience with audio on mobile devices?
