Chat: Channeling the Backchannel

Wi-Fi and laptops in classrooms have exploded traditional norms and practices of learning. The thousand year old tradition of the sage on the stage has been disrupted. Should instructors remain in denial of the fact that they now have to compete with the Internet for their students' attention? Or should they turn off Wi-Fi or tell students to close their laptops? Or is there a rhetoric to the use of the backchannel in the classroom, just as there is an undocumented rhetoric to blogging and social processes associated with the use of wikis by groups?
