Programming/API mashups

Programming mashups are web-based programs which use existing APIs (application programming interface) to create a new application, which benefits from the features and interactivity of both components. Popular examples include HousingMaps.com, which allows users to search for housing on Craiglist using Google's interactive maps.

Mapping

Map-based mashups are particularly popular because there are a variety of APIs available, and they offer a range of creative possibilities for new programs. Map mashups allow you to overlay various kinds of data to create new functionality, such as seeing on a map where your friends on a social networking site live, or tracking the location of items for sale on auction sites.

Business

While mashups probably have some business potential, for the moment, companies like Google and Yahoo are allowing programmers to use their APIs -- as long as the mashups they create are also free.

Media mashups

Media mashups result from remixing existing media samples together to create something new, often satirical or ironic. Examples include video mashups, such as faux movie trailers, where the creators have spliced together two different movies to create a third, often humorous, one, juxtaposing the elements from the originals. Long before people were creating digital mashups, though, turntablists were mixing records and incorporating samples from other records to create new musical works, which now forms the basis for much current dance and electronic music.

Music mashups remain popular, where two songs are remixed digitally at the same tempo to create a new piece. Other media mashups include Machinima, the art of creating digital stories with images from video games.
