Statistician Position Description

Position Title: Statistician

Location/Department: Brain Resource, Ultimo, NSW

Reporting to: Senior Statistician, Science/R&D Director

Position Purpose: Brain Resource specialises in human brain data (genetics, behavioural, autonomic, EEG, ERP,
MRI). The Statistician is to assist in the creation/extraction datasets for analysis and in the
programming, execution, presentation and reporting of analyses. The Statistician may also
assist in the development of data analysis plans for pharmaceutical trials in collaboration with
the client or non-statistical staff members, with the support of the Senior Statistician.

Nature of Work:
The objectives listed below outline the scope of the position. These objectives may vary,
depending on current needs of the company.

Objective 1: Dataflow, statistical design and analysis
• Design analyses and write analysis plans with the support of more experienced members
of the statistical science team.
• Work with data and statistical science team members within company infrastructure to
ensure efficient scoring, processing and extraction of datasets.
• Assist in selecting statistical methods for data analysis, authoring the corresponding
sections of protocol documents or method sections of scientific papers, and conducting
the analysis once analysis datasets are created.
• Maintain learning of new analysis techniques and show understanding of the rationale for
the methods selected.

Objective 2: Communication of Results and Inferences
• Collaborate with team members to write reports and communicate results. This includes
formal (e.g, trial report) and informal (e.g, powerpoint presentation) reporting of work.
• Show a high level of attention to detail during the compilation of large amounts of
statistical output to ensure accurate presentation and reporting of results.
• Ability to fluently communicate statistical information to non-statisticians in both written
and spoken form.
• Respond to statistical queries from other functional areas (eg, Science, R&D and
Marketing).

Objective 3: Substantive Knowledge
• Show a continuing interest to further substantive knowledge of the analysis subject
areas, which include psychiatric illness, neuroanatomy, psychology and pharmacology.
• Publication of findings in peer reviewed scientific journals will be desirable.

Objective 4: Compliance with industry guidelines
• Perform work in full compliance with appropriate regulatory guidelines and be
responsible for following applicable corporate, medical, local and departmental policies,
procedures, processes and training.

Essential Requirements
• Strong knowledge of scientific research methodology and statistics.
• Educated to at least Honours level in Statistics, Biostatistics, Mathematics, Psychology,
Medicine or other social/biological science. If degree was non-statistical require a major
in mathematics or statistics, or at least 1 year statistical work experience. If degree was
statistical would prefer applicants with a major in a social/biological science, or
experience with a substantial research project.
• Ability to code statistical analyses and output in at least two of the following scripting
languages: SAS programming; SPSS syntax, R/SPlus scripting; Python; MS Visual
Basic, MATLAB.
• Demonstrated ability to write scientific reports, particularly in regards to statistical
methodology.
• Strong MS Excel essential. Strong MS Word and MS Powerpoint skills highly desirable.
• Interpersonal communication skills for effective communication within the team, as well
as customer consultation.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently to achieve deadlines.
• Demonstrated initiative, problem solving ability and strategic thinking.
