Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is one of the oldest sociable technologies on the Internet. Through various ports on IRC, you can talk to others who have joined the same channel on the same network.

If you aren't familiar with IRC, you may want to read the IRC FAQ. A few notes on what to do are at the bottom of this page.

At SIGGRAPH, we are using the network irc.freenode.net on Port 6667. The default channel is #siggraph, but we encourage anyone to setup other channels for each room or collection of ideas. Publicize your channel below.

^^^Etiquette

Although these channels may or may not be completely open and unregulated, we ask that you respect other attendees and speakers. The purpose of the IRC channel is to provide a complementary space for discussing the content of SIGGRAPH. Please consider using the same type of language that would be considered socially acceptable throughout the conference center. Hate, intolerance, disrespect and slander are not welcome.

^^^IRC Channels

All IRC channels for SIGGRAPH should be located at irc.freenode.net on Port 6667 for ease of access.

  1. #siggraph -> default channel

^^^Simple Instructions

Once you have installed your IRC client, run the program. You will probably be asked for a network and a port. You want irc.freenode.net and 6667. You will then see a command line. Before joining a channel, set your nickname. You can do this in the preferences of your client, or by typing '/nick yourname' in the command line. After you have chosen your nickname, join the siggraph IRC channel by typing '/join #siggraph' in the command line. This will bring you into the chatroom with everyone else.

To learn more about IRC commands, read the IRC Help. For the most part, typing is all you need.
