Existing technology makes this possible. It requires no major technology development or permission or major funding.
Here are a few reasons why it is possible right now:
- Hosting costs are dropping to zero, especially thanks to the Internet Archive, who have agreed to provide unlimited free hosting.
- Sharing culture is emerging, especially thanks to Creative Commons
- The Internet is emerging as an open media architecture for publishing and audience building.
- Link TV provides an instant conduit to 20M homes. Other outlets, like FreeSpeech TV, PBS, etc. are also possibilities
- Mainstream distribution options are multiplying rapidly, especially with the advent of timeshifting and internet distribution
Long-term sustainability, even major success is very much within reach, primarily because this initiative makes it possible for two very valuable resources to reach critical mass: media by passionate creators, and audiences who care about it.
