Slightly subjective, like all good statistics.
Analyzing 30 of the blogs from the Fortune 500 list, Mitch Turck has compiled a bias graph in order to group the corporate blogs into writing and content styles. The idea is to try to find a pattern (or total lack of one) in the corporate approach to blogging.
Content style:
Information vs. Commentary
The tendency to publish articles based on product rollouts, financial news, event calendars, etc., versus the tendency to publish articles based on experiences, opinions on corporate matters, day-to-day activities, and consumer or employee testimonials
Writing style:
Logical & Formal vs. Casual & Colloquial
The tendency to publish articles in a professional, public-relations-like manner, versus the tendency to publish articles in a social, community discussion-like manner.
While there is obviously an element of subjectivity, the grammar, usage, voice and tone of an article are usually excellent indicators of the intended content and writing style. The 30 blogs were chosen primarily at random (they had to be operational and at least 10 articles old, read essay format ), and each blog was measured by randomly selecting 10 of its articles for measurement. Both the Content Style and Writing Style gauges are based on their own proportion of 10. That is to say, a blog might be a 7 for Information vs. 3 for Commentary, and 4 for Logical & Formal vs. 6 for Casual & Colloquial. (research paper writing)
Some of the theory used in this study:
- Writing in first or second person is primarily a function of Casual & Colloquial. Third person indicates more formal writing.
- Discussing the development of a new product is a function of Information. Discussing personal experiences with the new product is a function of Commentary.
- Use of sporadic punctuation (overzealous ellipsis marks, run-on sentences, etc.) and interjections is a function of Casual & Colloquial.
- Use of exclamation points, smilies or other emotion-based punctuation is a function of Casual & Colloquial.
- Use of technical data and diagrams is a function of Information. Use of event and personnel photos is a function of Commentary.
Feel free to add more blogs to analyze, change the analysis if you think you've gauged the blog more appropriately, or ridicule this entire idea. Be sure to delete or revise the diagram image if you make any changes at all.

Approximately two-thirds of the weblogs studied were more casual and personable than formal and cold, indicating that these companies are utilizing blogs as a way to humanize the brand. One-third of the measured blogs opted to create the bulk of their content with a “commentary” bias.

Its a very effective way of generating traffic to a corporate site by following all the latest Buzz words and generating content around them. Brands names generate a great deal of searches online and if the companies don't keep up with providing the latest information on their products then other blogs will and reap the reward by picking up the traffic. Walmart is only on the list cause in most cases it forces itself into a community by eventually being the only place to shop anymore for most items. People only go there (even if they hate the place like i do) because its easier to find a particular item then hunting all over town. the service sucks and consist of workers hiding from you in order to keep from helping you. I use to work at three locations and the conversations always include "this customer did this this customer did that, this customer is stupid cause he asked for this or that..." its a constant hate ring and making fun of people. when a call comes over the intercom for assisting a customer it comes down to flipping a coin or people arguing about whos going to go. after working in three of these walmarts only to see the same thing I am concidering this a regular routine in ALL of them.
Therefore , I ask you... "DO They Really Belong In The Top 500?"
