Board Membership Criteria:

1. The METS Editorial Board maintains editorial control of METS, its XML Schema, the METS Profile XML Schema, and official METS documentation. Additionally, the Board promotes the use of the standard, maintains a registry of METS Profiles, and endorses best practices in the use of METS as they emerge. The METS Editorial Board is representative of important communities of interest for METS, including members of the Digital Library Federation, its initial sponsor, and the Library of Congress, its maintenance agency. The maximum number of Board members is 15.
2. Board member criteria:

• Coming from institution or organization previously, currently or imminently engaged in implementation of METS
• Representatative of one or more of the following constituencies from the international digital library community:
• National, Academic or Public Libraries
• Museums
• Archives
• Information services utilities
• Governmental agencies or organizations
• Vendors supporing digital library operations
• Demonstrated experience in the following areas:
• XML or other information encoding languages
• Digital library or digital repository implementations using METS
• Metadata for digital libraries or repositories such as descriptive, administrative, packing or transport schemas
• Tool development and /or use for digital information creation, capture, storage and management, discovery or retrieval
• Committed support from home institution to support face to face meetings, telephone conferences, training events, and other Board activities
• Demonstrated ability and interest in developing and fostering the use of METS within digital libraries / repositories and building a strong METS community of implementors
• Ability to commit to a 3 year term with the possibility of renewal.

1. Expectations for METS Board member participation:

• Makes a serious commitment to meeting the Mission & Objectives of the METS Editorial Board
• Participates actively in the work of the to maintain and promote the Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard schema and its related schema including the METS Profile schema.
• Regularly attends face to face meetings including some or all of those associated with the Digital Library Federation Forums, and intervening conference calls.
• Prepares for meetings, stays informed about committee and work group activities, and reviews and comments upon meeting notes, committee and work group reports, and and METS listserv communications as appropriate.
• Gets to know other Board members and builds collegial relationships among Board members that contribute to informed and congenial decisionmaking.
• Exercises professional judgment about changes to the METS and METS related schemas, and the impacts of changes upon current implementations as known by personal experience or by input from other METS implementors.
• Participates in committee or work group activities, educational training events and other METS promotional and fundraising activities.
• Commits to a 3 year term of appointment with the possibility of renewal
