How to Reach and Empower Teens*

Offer Incentives

  • Money doesn't hurt/scholarships
  • Rewards (badges/virtual merchandise)
  • Community service opportunities
  • Status/popularity
  • "Ata boys" or "Ata girls" from moderator or leaders in the community when caught doing/being good

Make it Fun and Engaging

  • Allow for tracking friends
  • Games (flash or alternate realilty - melding online and offline reality, such as recent Nine Inch Nails and AFI promos)
  • Music
  • Avatars
  • Chat
  • Forums
  • Virtural world (pets, etc.)
  • Provide means for self-expression and feedback
  • Socially conscious
  • Leadership opportunities

  • Youth Noise
  • Youth Venture

  • Make content relevant - resume builder, college info
  • Keep it simple (registration must be easy)
  • Connect online to real world action
  • It's a given, so you should expect it and plan for it
  • Keep their friends on the site
  • Form alliances
