I am available for multi-lingual information retrieval and translations related to Spanish, French, or English, but my native language is English.

How to use the Translations space

Posted by Constantin Basturea on Dec 31 3:16am

I am updating the procedures. The instructions below the line are obsolete.

I've created a workspace at the Wiki. This makes it a bit easier since the Wiki punctuation etc. will work, and you won't just be looking at plain text which is not linked. Have a look at the sample workspace, and try to copy it. I've cut and paste the English content into the Japanese translation workspace as another example.

You can also have a look at the Malay translation. Click the "Edit" tab near the top of the page to see the actual "wiki text".

If anything is unclear, please do not hesitate to email or pm me directly.

^^^^The following is now obsolete

Here's an example on how you can work here:

In order to start working on translating a new page, follow this steps:

  • go to this page - Translations Weblog - and click on the New Blog Post link (near the orange RSS button).
  • Add a meaningful title in the Subject field, for instance: Missing Persons Page - Thai translation
  • as content, add the English version of the text you want to translate in its English version, then Save.

Now you can edit the page wiki-style, using the Edit this page link (below the posting's title), until it's ready for posting on the big wiki.

Advantages:

  • you don't have to swap e-mails all the time and copy-paste the text - the text it's always in the page
  • you can keep track of changes by:
    • using the page history (so you don't risk loosing anything)
    • comparing versions of pages (by using page's history)
    • using the full-text RSS feed, for notifications

And you don't need to worry about the wiki markup - just use plain text.

You'll find all your postings here: Translations Weblog; there's a link to it in the upper right *Blogroll" menu.

Join the translators mailing list (or just watch this blog for updates) :)

Added Translations Workspace to new Wiki

Posted by user1725 on Jan 5 9:29am

Added a translations workspace at the new Wiki site. Instead of using this socialtext wiki keep your work-in-progress, you can keep it there. I recommend looking at the French translation for a well-thought-out model. --David Chin

David, the whole idea of having a volunteer workspace was to have a different place where the work can be done before it's ready for public.

Meanwhile, I understand :) that switching between Socialtext and the wiki can be confusing for translators.

Use the space that's more convenient for you, but please try to reach an aggreement between all the members of your team regarding WHERE you're working, and what's the drill.

Thank you!
