Why do hot dogs come in packs of 10 while buns come in packs of 8 or 12?

Bakers tend to package their wares in dozens or in other multiples of three or four. Meatpackers sell by the pound, and a standard hot dog is 0.1 pounds. Oscar Mayer insists that only 10 consumers - or is it 12? - write in annually to complain.

First of all, who said that buns are only for hot dogs? Might you also put sausage in the very same long buns? Sausage comes in various amounts depending on the manufacturer.

Another way to look at it is that the bun makers know that people tend to preferentially drop hot dogs or buns. The packages of 8 are for the people who drop hot dogs, the packages of 12 are for people who drop buns.

Hotdogs are terrific inside and outside the bun. Hence, while enjoying delicious, traditional-style hotdogs on buns, you might also delve into a fine side of beanies-n-weenies. Therein you have the best of both words and a properly proportioned meal.

Premium hot dogs usually come in packages of eight. It's all the cheap b*stards throwing off the curve. ;-)

Apparently nobody here's ever had a Hebrew National kosher hot dog. They come in packs of 7. Too bad they don't stand up in the Menorah, but in any case you'll have a bun left over instead of one or more dogs. Imagine the possibilities!

Buy two packs of hot dogs, one bag of buns and a golden retiever.

Problem solved.

Greed. It's all about the profit, as can be explained by the following equation:

10 Hot Dogs + 8 Hot Dog Buns + ??? = Profit!

As it turns out, to make it come out even, you'd have to buy 4 packs of hot dogs and 5 packs of buns (profit!).
But if you have 12 packs of buns, you'd have to buy 6 packs of hot dogs and 5 packs of buns to have an even amount (even more profit!).

i agree with comment "Hotdogs are terrific inside and outside the bun." inside and outside, inside and outside, inside and outside....
